The Role of Technology Assessment in the Biotechnology Debate in Germany
نویسنده
چکیده
As in other industrialised countries, Technology Assessment (TA) was introduced in Germany as an instrument to foresee the consequences and to mediate in conflicts of technological decisions. As a social scientist who has been working on biotechnology and as an activist in the political debate on that theme, I will focus my analysis on the transformation of the genetic engineering debate in Germany within the framework of TA. For social and environmental pressure groups TA might be a channel to address their claims. But on the other hand they might be absorbed in the labyrinths of the mere technical details without any political results. So I will also discuss criteria surrounding the question of whether or not they should participate in these procedures.

Biosafety Issues in Biotechnology and Engineering of Microorganisms
Currently much debate, attention and concern surrounds the use of genetically modified plants or animals. But there has not been much concern about microorganisms, although we all are aware of the place of microorganisms in the circle of life, their abundance and diversity. There are many examples regarding the application of genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs), however, like other hig...
متن کاملThe Bright Elusive Butterfly of Value in Health Technology Development; Comment on “Providing Value to New Health Technology: The Early Contribution of Entrepreneurs, Investors, and Regulatory Agencies”
The current system of health technology development is characterised by multiple misalignments. The “supply” side (innovation policy-makers, entrepreneurs, investors) and the “demand” side (health policy-makers, regulators, health technology assessment, purchasers) operate under different – and conflicting – logics. The system is less a “pathway” than an unstable ecosystem of multiple interacti...
متن کاملAnammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance
This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...
متن کاملProduction and First Assessment of Iranian Secondary Tritipyrum Genotypes (ISTG) by GISH and AFLP Markers in Iran and Germany
Background: Non-Iranian Primary Tritipyrum (2n=6x=42, AABBEbEb) set seed after Triticale (2n=6x=42, AABBRR) and Tritordeum (2n=6x=42, AABBHcHc) but, due to a few undesirable agronomic traits, it cannot fulfil the commercial expectations of farming. Objectives: To remove these deficiencies, six hexaploid Tritipyrum lines were crossed with four Iranian bread wheat cultivars which led to the...
متن کاملEthics in HTA: Examining the “Need for Expansion”
The article by Daniels and colleagues on expanding the scope of health technology assessment (HTA) to embrace ethical analysis has received endorsement and criticism from commentators in this journal. Referring to this debate, we examine in this article the extent and locus of ethical analysis in HTA processes. An expansion/no-expansion framing of HTA is, in our view, not very fruitful. We argu...
